Genre: Minor Prophet. Theme: Justice for the Oppressed
- Author: Amos
- Date: c. 760-750 BC
- Read Time: 30 mins
- Purpose: To condemn social injustice and hypocrisy.
- Key Verse: Amos 5:24 - But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
- Christ: The One who restores David's fallen tent.
- Audience: The wealthy, self-indulgent elite who were oppressing the poor
- Background: Amos was a shepherd, not a professional prophet.
- Social Justice: The most aggressive biblical critique of greed, bribery, and the abuse of the vulnerable.
- Unprofessional Prophet: Amos was a shepherd and fig-picker, not a member of the 'prophetic guild'.
Amos argues that God despises the religious singing of those who trample on the poor in their business dealings.
The book begins with judgment on the surrounding nations to lure Israel in before dropping the hammer on them.
Jesus is the restorer of the 'fallen booth of David' (9:11) who brings justice to the nations.
